The Regional Access Project Foundation provides funding, oversight, technical assistance and guidance to tax exempt/nonprofit agencies, community based organizations, or collaborative groups, which serve the populations of eastern Riverside County, in the areas of health, mental health, and juvenile intervention.

Summary:  Effective mid-March 2020 Desert Ability Center’s programs were put on hold due to Covid-19. In an effort to reduce isolation and decline in health of our target population, an online program of training was created for spinal cord injured, neurologically impaired and amputees. This program was created in consultation with the Adaptive Training Academy (ATA) of San Diego. The current program was made possible through the balance of a grant that had been provided by the Christopher Reeve Foundation and will end December 2020. The program is focused on physical fitness with the focus on wheelchair users and people with other upper body limitations. Youth and adults with disabilities deal with isolation in the course of acquiring a disability and throughout their lives. COVID has exacerbated this situation. Desert Ability Center is re-designing our programs to support their ongoing engagement and ward off the depression that has resulted from the past 7 months of ongoing isolation. In the process of re-designing our programs, in September 2020 DAC communicated with Dr. Jay Seller, new director of the Neurovitality Center. Dr. Seller has experience in programs for spinal cord injured as well as an interest in finding/creating programs for the Center’s stroke clients as their facility is shut down as well. The NVC is serving as a referral source and to date three of their clients were added to this program. NVC has committed to working with DAC to identify and engage more of their clients. DAC has committed to their inclusion and meeting their unique needs as stroke survivors. The proposed program will include: (1) Weekly Virtual Synchronous Fitness Training for at home participation Judy May Desert Ability Center Printed On: 12 November 2020 Small Grant Application 3 (2) Recorded guided asynchronous at-home training (3) Fitness Foundation Training to include fitness education through exercise technique. Starter equipment is provided to each participant in the form of professional exercise bands and door attachments for home use. Quite amazingly and proficiently ATA provides individualized instruction despite 8-11 people in the class at any given time. No one is left behind and all are included on some level.
